Some of these seem needlessly complex. Here in Brazil, we are replacing traditional traffic lights with ones that give you a visual countdown with light bars showing how soon the light will change. Green and red lights. Works beautifully.
In an unusual (for a government) economical policy, they are only installing them as replacements as the old lights fail.
