Not all jellyfish sting. I once had a jellyfish fight at night with some friends, using jellyfishes that had stranded on the beach. The cool thing was that the jellyfish would glow when they hit, since they were bioluminescent.
I would have thought those jellyfish were poisonous… they’ve got the whole cauliflower venom thing going on underneath. And yet, I remember visiting my grandparents in new zealand as a kid, and there were these funny jellyfish you could throw around like frizbees.
These are Mnemiopsis leidyi. They have been taking over the black sea since the 80s, they’re hermaphrodites so they reproduce quite rapidly! (they don’t need to find a date!) They also don’t sting like some other jellyfish. I’m sure the woman in the picture was just fine.
Get used to the jellyfish, boys and girls. Our fantastic land management means that fertilizer finds it way into the oceans and then you get lovely interactions that lead to gazillions, literally, of jelly fish of all shapes and sizes.
You’re going to be seeing many more jelly fish stories in the years to come.
1)although the black sea is technically “south” of russia, it is just hardly south of russia, because it is so far west.
2) No, all jellyfish do not sting you idiots. the orders in the class scyphozoa that have nematocysts (stinging organelles)are limited. thats like asking “do all vertebrates clean there genitals with there tongue?”. I dont know do you?
Those jellyfish aren’t dangerous, the lake they exist in is totally cut off from any other water supply so they’ve evolved to have no self defence as there is no need for any.

Judging from the second picture onwards.
It seems that the jellyfish have devoured the lady.

March 15th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
WTF that is just sick! They need to drop a couple hundred gallons of poison in that water to clean out all those disgusting jellyfish.

How do you think they thrive there?
